Bedding & Bulb Planting in the Pocklington Area

At J. G Garden Services we pride ourself at producing beautiful gardens in Pocklington and the surrounding areas, and one of our favourites is planting bulbs like Crocuses and Daffodils. Crocuses and Snowdrops and the first signs that spring is coming. quickly followed by the Daffodil.

🌼 How to Combine Bedding & Bulbs

This technique is often called a “bulb lasagne” or layered planting:

  1. Plant bulbs first: Place them at the correct depth (usually 2–3 times the bulb’s height).

  2. Add compost: Cover bulbs with a layer of soil or compost.

  3. Add bedding plants: Choose compact, shallow-rooted varieties like petunias, marigolds, or pansies.

  4. Water well: Especially after planting to help roots establish.

This setup allows bulbs to bloom first, then die back as bedding plants take over for summer colour.

When to Plant

  • Spring-flowering bulbs (like tulips, daffodils, crocuses): Plant in autumn (September–November).

  • Summer-flowering bulbs (like lilies, gladioli, dahlias): Plant in spring (March–May).

  • Bedding plants: Add in late spring or early summer, once the risk of frost has passed.

Every garden is unique and soil quality can vary significantly from garden to garden, at J G Garden Services we are happy to work with your ideas and offer free friendly advice to create a beautiful garden you deserve.
